Do you want to learn more about herbs and their uses?
The Wairarapa Herb Society was established in 1982 and since that time has encouraged membership to share knowledge and develop our common interest in all things herbal and natural. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at the Community Centre in Dixon Street at 1.30pm where the convenor for that meeting will share their knowledge on a particular herb or will demonstrate its use in making natural products for use in the home, garden, for health and beauty. We may have someone discuss their trip to a particular part of the world where they have experienced a different culture and also a different approach to using plants for healing and in their day to day living. As members we gain insight into understanding and appreciating how valuable it is to collect our seeds and propagate our plants.
Once a month we arrange a weekend visit to either a garden or place of particular interest to our members. These meetings are always well attended especially for those whose work precludes them from attending the Tuesday meetings. The WHS also distributes a quarterly newsletter (often a few more than quarterly, when there is a lot of news to convey to members). We share handy tips, recipes, gardening ideas, our upcoming programme, book of the month and always information on a few herbs and how they can be used.
During its existence, the Wairarapa Herb Society has published a recipe book with contributions from members and recently, a book entitled “Herbal, Green and Practical Tips”, a great little green book packed with helpful hints and remedies using practical, traditional methods. It is even more important these days to be able to get the job done using environmentally friendly products which are cheaper and more gentle on the skin and surfaces. These books are obtainable at a cost of $10 through the WHS telephone: Bev Wood on 377-1278 or Val Richardson on 377-2035.
Anyone who is interested in joining the society will be most welcome. Come along to one of our meetings and join us in learning and sharing our common interest.
